Birmingham’s Enterprise Zones – mutually benefiting the country, businesses and people

As part of the Birmingham Big City Plan, the local council has identified six zones in the city that has the opportunity for economic growth. The first of these zones will be The City Centre Enterprise Zone, the largest of the six zones, which includes 26 sites across the city centre. The 26 sites will cover 68 hectares, in seven clusters:
  • Westside
  • Snow Hill District
  • Eastside
  • Southern Gateway
  • Digbeth Creative Quarter
  • Birmingham Science Park Aston
  • Jewellery Quarter

As one of the major projects in the UK, the Enterprise Zone (EZ) brings a lot to Birmingham:
  • Creating 40,000 new jobs
  • An additional £2 billion to the economy
  • The creation of 1.3 million square meters of floorspace
  • Improved commuter infrastructure
The EZ will be used to target and boost the significant growth opportunities in the banking and financial services, digital media and creative industry and IT and communication companies, many of which are already established in the area. In order to encourage new businesses, there will be a Enterprise Zone Relief, where eligible businesses can get up to 100% discount for a maximum of 5 years. £73 million has been allocated by the council for the Business Rates Relief. There will be improvements on the Metro, with £25 million being spent on extending the line, and a further £18 million will be used to improve public footpath infrastructures.

Birmingham Investment Opportunities

The EZ focuses on creating a sustainable future economy, which relies heavily on having a city work force that also contribute to the economy. Birmingham anticipates new businesses entering the market, as well as the expansion of existing businesses. The projected increase in workforce presents the opportunity to create new housing to service the needs of the growing professional population.
